Point-of-care manufacturing and variable dosing
The AdaptiMed technology can provide point-of-care manufacturing, as the equipment is small enough to be integrated into a hospital pharmacy.
The technology provides a highly accurate and controlled method to create small batch runs of dose forms for flexible or personalised dosing. The AdaptiMed solution combines small run flexibility with industrial manufacturing quality and reliability.
Medics may desire to provide customised doses to patients in certain situations. The industry’s current technology platforms (large-scale manufacturing of tablets and capsules) only allow for 4-5 dose strengths to be produced for each active compound, due to the economics of the manufacturing processes. (In-process quality checks and machine set-up and clean-down activities are time-consuming and expensive; this fact drives the industry to minimize the complexity of the manufacturing process and to limit the set of dose choices that are available.)
Hospital pharmacies may prepare customized preparations for individual patients, but this activity is complex and onerous and requires skilled pharmacy staff.
The AdaptImed technology allows for the potential integration of a robust, fully-validated (i.e. controlled and characterised) industrial-quality production unit to be installed in or close to a hospital location, in order to provide individualised doses when medics require these. This opens up the possibility of routine dose customisation and point-of-care manufacturing for solid oral dose forms.
In addition, the ability to provide small runs of different doses at short notice allows for variable dosing, for example for specific patient populations or individual patients. The team is working to develop a combination product that would enable large scale mass customisation for use in middle-income countries, opening up the possibility of a customisable “polypill” for the treatment for cardiovascular and metabolic indications.
